What is GATE Exam?

GATE (GRADUATE APTITUDE TEST IN ENGINEERING)

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), is an All-India Examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

It is conducted by a different institute every year among the 7 IITs & IISc, Bangalore.

GATE Notification comes in the month of September and Test is conducted normally in the month of February and the Results are announced in the month of march every year.

GATE has become online now for all the 24 disciplines of Engineering. Candidates have to apply GATE through online. The application fee is Rs.1500/- for General/OBC and Rs.750/- for SC/ST/PwD* categories and female applicants of any category.

GATE SCORE is valid for 3 years and there is no restriction on number of attempts.

ELIGIBILITY for GATE:

AGE ELIGIBILITY:

There is no upper age limit.

ACADEMIC ELIGIBLITY:

The following categories of candidates are eligible to appear for GATE

  • B.E/B.Tech/B.Arch/B.Pharm graduates (Post-B.Sc/Post-Diploma/4 years after 10+2) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Master’s degree holders in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computers or equivalent and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master’s degree program (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology or candidates in the fourth or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master’s degree program or Dual degree program in Engineering/Technology.

Candidates with qualifications obtained through examination conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE like AMIE, AMICE as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed Section A are also eligible.

Examination Paper is a combination of 35 questions from multiple choice & rest 30 questions are from Numerical answer type. For 1mark MCQs, 1/3mark is deducted for each wrong answer. Likewise, for 2mark MCQs, 2/3 mark is deducted for each wrong answer. There is NO negative marking for numerical answer type questions.

TYPE OF QUESTIONS

GATE is an Online Computer Based Test (CBT) of 3hrs duration that consists of Multiple-choice Questions and Numerical Type Question in all papers & sections. Multiple choice Questions will contain 4 options, of which only one is correct. For Numerical Type Questions, a numerical value as the answer should be entered using mouse and virtual keyboard on the monitor.

Advantages of GATE Coaching

  • Students who qualify in GATE Exam are entitled to a stipend of Rs.12,400/- per month during their M.E, M.TECH M.S (By Research) Program and Rs. 28,000/- per month for PhD Program in IISc, IITs, NITs, Central universities, Government colleges, and Private colleges
  • Clearing GATE is also an eligibility clause for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories. M.Tech. degree is mandatory for those wishing to apply for research positions in R&D centers

  • MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS AT NITIE, MUMBAI : Offers three PG Diploma Programs – PGDIE, PGDPM, PGDMM (Equivalent to MBA)
  • FELLOW PROGRAM IN MANAGEMENT – IIMs : The Fellow Program in Management (FPM) is the doctorial program of the IIMs. Specializations that accept GATE score for FPM admissions are Behaviour sciences, HRM, MIS, OR, PQM, IS, Industrial Relations, Public Systems, Strategic Management with stipend of Rs. 22,000/-
  • A GATE score is preferred for Technical interviews in many Private Sector companies and it also helps students to join in reputed companies as well as off-campus recruitments
  • For those who couldn’t pursue their B.Tech in IIT, it provides another opportunity to study in the prestigious IITs.
